Life with bipolar disorder often means unpredictable mood swings—from crushing lows to periods of intense energy and restlessness. While traditional medications and therapy are vital, many individuals still face delayed improvements or persistent symptoms that interrupt their daily lives.
At Tennessee Ketamine & Wellness Center in Franklin, we offer medically supervised, low-dose ketamine infusions designed to quickly stabilize brain chemistry and offer meaningful relief when it’s needed most.
Bipolar disorder is rooted in imbalances involving glutamate and GABA, which disrupt the brain’s ability to regulate emotions effectively. Ketamine works by blocking NMDA receptors on inhibitory neurons, which triggers a temporary but controlled release of glutamate in brain areas like the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex.
This increase stimulates AMPA receptors and activates the mTOR pathway, encouraging the formation of new neural connections. In simpler terms, ketamine helps the brain “reboot,” strengthening the networks that maintain emotional balance and reducing the intensity of mood fluctuations.
While lithium and mood stabilizers such as lamotrigine or valproate remain essential in managing bipolar disorder long-term, their effects can take weeks to fully activate.
Clinical studies show that a single intravenous ketamine infusion (typically 0.5 mg/kg over a 40-minute period) can significantly reduce depressive symptoms within 4 to 24 hours. In some cases, ketamine may also help dampen manic or hypomanic episodes.
For individuals facing suicidal ideation or extreme emotional swings, this rapid effect can be life-saving. A structured treatment plan—usually starting with two infusions per week, then tapering to every few weeks—helps sustain these improvements while working alongside your psychiatric provider.
Your journey starts with a comprehensive evaluation, including medical history, medication review, and any relevant lab work to ensure you’re a good candidate for treatment.
During each infusion session, you’ll rest comfortably in a private treatment suite while ketamine is administered through an IV over the course of approximately 40 minutes.
Our experienced team carefully tracks your heart rate, blood pressure, and subjective experience throughout the process and during the hour following the infusion.
Many patients leave feeling more emotionally grounded, with sharper mental clarity and fewer mood disruptions—even after a single visit.
Ketamine is particularly beneficial for adults with bipolar disorder who continue to experience mood instability despite trying two or more mood-stabilizing medications.
It’s also ideal for those dealing with rapid cycling or severe depressive episodes that interfere with everyday functioning.
Our team conducts thorough screening for cardiovascular health and past substance use, since ketamine can temporarily increase blood pressure and cause mild dissociative effects.
When administered in a controlled setting like ours, ketamine offers significant symptom relief with minimal risk.
Most individuals begin with an initial “induction” series—typically two infusions per week for three weeks.
Once initial stability is achieved, we shift to maintenance infusions every three to six weeks based on your progress and personal response.
We stay in close communication with your psychiatrist to ensure your full treatment plan—including any adjustments to oral medications—remains aligned and optimized.
Combining ketamine therapy with structured psychotherapy or bipolar support groups often enhances the long-term impact by helping patients build healthy habits and emotional tools that stick.
Our protocols prioritize safety while maximizing results. Common, short-lived side effects may include a slight rise in heart rate or blood pressure, a mild sensation of dissociation, or transient nausea.
These effects are expected and handled by our medical staff on-site. Unlike recreational use, therapeutic ketamine is delivered in safe, carefully measured doses that minimize risk to the bladder or other organs.
We schedule regular follow-ups between infusions to track your progress and address any concerns as early as possible.
If you’re tired of waiting weeks for your medications to work—or still struggling with unpredictable mood shifts—ketamine therapy may offer the stability you’ve been seeking.
